An alternative way to count your reps

Spelling your reps

As I was working out this morning with my workout partner, he normally counts my number of reps for each set, and attempts to push me to get those last couple reps. A workout partner can be motivating in this aspect because sometimes you will get out a couple extra reps by yourself, or even with their help. As we tend to joke around some, we came up with a different way to count the reps, by spelling out words.
While this may sound silly at first, there is actually good reason to use this method. For one, it is easy to become psychological intimated when you are pressing heavy weight and you are on rep number two of a ten rep set. You know in your head that you are at the very beginning, and you have a long way to go. If you are spelling words, there isn’t that psychological deterrent that may prevent you from getting the reps.
Our goal was to try to think of words that have a various number of letters for each set. For example “Protein Shake” is a word that has twelve letters, equivalent to a twelve rep set. So instead of counting “1,2,3,4,5,etc”, you would be spelling “P,R,O,T,E,etc”. As goofy as this sounds, give it a try. You might be surprised at the difference it makes in your workout.
