Which Pre-Workout Supplement is the best?

What is the best pre-workout?

There are literally dozens and dozens of pre-workout supplements on the market right now.  It is no wonder why they are so popular as it is one of the only supplements that you get instant gratification.  When you take supplements such as protein and creatine, you may get results but they will take time.  When you take a good pre-workout, you will feel it working in around 20 or 30 minutes!

Over my 25 years of working out, I have tried many, many pre-workouts.  Some worked great, and others didn’t do anything for me whatsoever.  Pre-workouts affect people differently due to many factors including your weight, caffeine tolerance and simply your genetic makeup.  Two people can use the exact same pre-workout and one may think its the best thing ever, while the other person thinks they can’t feel a thing from it.  So just because I love one, doesn’t mean it is going to work for you.  However, since I have tried many over the years and I am not connected with any supplement companies, I can give you my honest, unbiased opinion of which ones I like the best.

If you look at Bodybuilding.com’s pre-workouts, the current top ten selling pre-workout supplements look like this at the time of this article:

  1. Optimum Amino Energy
  2. Cellucor C4
  3. Evlution Engn
  4. Kaged Muscle Pre-Kaged
  5. Pre-Jym
  6. Pro Supps Mr. Hyde
  7. Gat Nitraflex
  8. Muscletech Vapor V5
  9. RSP Nutrition Dyno
  10. Cellucor C4 Ripped

These are just the top 10 might I add.  The list goes on, and on and on and on.  Some stick around awhile such as Cellucor C4, and others come and go.  My previous favorite pre-workouts were BSN No-Xplode and Cellucor C4.  I really, really liked NO-Xplode and used that one for several years.  It was one of the top sellers for a long time, but has slowly been taken over by a new hoard of pre-workouts.  After awhile, both No-Xplode and C4 starting giving me stomach problems.  I needed to find a new pre-workout that wouldn’t kill my stomach.

I tried several more pre-workouts but could not find one that I really liked.  Finally, I found one that worked pretty darn good and did not upset my stomach.  This one was Pro Supps Dr. Jekyll.  While not on the top 10 list like it’s brother Mr. Hyde, it is a quality pre-workout.  I got a good pump, energy and focus.  There was nothing wrong with it at all.  However, later I decided that it just wasn’t quite explosive enough for me, so I wanted to find something that really kicked me into gear.

Finally after ordering many of the top pre-workouts and usually being disappointed, I ordered Evlution Evl Engn (currently the #3 best seller).   After my first scoop, I was hooked.  About 20 minutes after taking it, I could feel the energy buildup.  Since I workout early in the morning, it took me from feeling sleepy to being amped for the gym.  I have had some of the best workouts using Evl Engn over the last few months, and it doesn’t seem to be losing it’s effectiveness.  Since it lacks in the “pump” ingredients department, I ordered some Kaged Muscle Citrulline to add into it.  So I combine one scoop of Evl engn, a scoop of Muscletech Creactor Creatine, and 6 mg of citrulline to make the ultimate pre-workout cocktail.

If you workout early in the morning and really need something to get your body into high gear for an intense workout, I highly recommend you try Evl Engn.  If it doesn’t do quite enough for you with the pumps, just add the other inexpensive ingredients I mentioned, and you should be amped and ready to have some kick ass workouts!

  1. I’m a big fan of pre-kaged. Just started using it a couple months back and works better than any I’ve taken
